Advice needed to prepare house for winter. Your top 10 tips...?

What would be your top 10 tips to advise a new homeowner to prepare their home for the colder months. For example, they already know to take the gasoline out of the mower. Change the furnace filter. * Turn off water to outside faucets. After you turn off the water from inside, go outside and turn the faucet on to empty the water out. (Prevents freezing)


* Empty hoses and bring them inside for storage.


* Gather and store lawn tools, decorations


* Clean gutters to keep ice from accumulating.


* Check weatherstripping around doors and windows, replacing any with gaps or tears.


* Fertilize/ winter feed lawn


* Remove plants that won't survive freezing, moving planters or digging up and storing geraniums, etc.


* Consider how holiday decorations will be displayed; consider additional GFCI outlets to make lights easy to install. (Neighbor had outlet installed under the eves, so that he didn't need extension cords from the ground.)Advice needed to prepare house for winter. Your top 10 tips...?
Make sure any fuses if your house has them are current or that you have spares.





Clean any vents in the house for heating and cooling efficiency.





Inspect your fireplace for any obstructions or loose parts. Make sure it is clean





Inspect pipes.





Gutters and drains should be checked.





Prune back any large bushes or trees on your property to appropriate sizes.





Caulk and weatherstrip any doors or windows that may let drafts in.





Take inventory of your linens. Buy sheets, blankets and pillows now to store up for winter.





Have a battery-operated radio in the house. Also candles and matches in case of a power short.





Keep extra water and some foods that do not need to be prepared with a stove in case of a storm.





Keep a mat at each doorway entrance to catch ice, snow, and salt, if you have a snow problem in your area. Nothing worse than tracking it into the house.
Caulk the windows outside if needed. Do the same inside.Get a supply of furnace filters and change once a month. If you get snow or ice, get your salt and shovel in an area easy to get at. Get the rugs together for wet feet. Put the product in your locks so that they don't freeze. Turn off water to outside faucets. Drain outside hoses. Wash the blankets throws and quilts you love.Get a supply of books, candles and special comfort foods to make those winter days nice and comfy.
Check the weatherstripping around all doors and windows and repair or caulk any gaps.





Clean your windows.





Put away outdoor furniture, tools, grill.





Unhook hoses from any outdoor faucets, drain and store indoors.





Mulch flower beds.





Put down a winterizing treatment for your lawn and keep leaves picked up .





Clean out gutters and downspouts to prevent ice buildup.





Purchase a snow shovel (or two) or a snowblower if needed in your area.
