Is ur budgie already tame? If not u need to get it used to human contact and let it know ur not going to hurt it, let it get used to u holding ur hand in its cage and eventually move it closer until it willl let u stroke its chest, eventually it should sit on ur finger. Until ur budgie gets settled and used to its new surroundings make sure when u let it out u have all the curtains shut as the budgies first instinct would be to fly straight at the window thinking it could escape. My budgie was brill, was out all of the time and wheneva i sat at the table and ate it would sit on the side of my plate an nibble at whateva i was eating. Get urself a book on taming budgies, i had one and it was great but sorry i cant remember what it was called. Well, you should have really done your research BEFORE getting a budgie, but better late than never.


Here's what I have found with experience.





Talk to your budgie as often as possible. If nobody will be with the budgie for some time (going to the shops etc) turn on a radio which the budgie can listen to. I would advise AGAINST a mirror, as my budgie got quite aggressive when it was placed in his cage.


If it is a young budgie (which is the ideal age to buy one) just talk to it and don't make any sudden movements which could seem threatening. Sing or whistle to him. (ideally it will be a boy).


If you are quite confident, offer your finger to him and he will peck it gently. Stroke his head gently.





IMPORTANT


Make sure that you change his water EVERY DAY and that the water bottle is clean. Wash it with some Fairy liquid if necessary. Only give him cool water (not freezing though). In the summer, if it's hot, change his water half way through the day.





FEEDING


Ask the petshop where you got him how much feed he needs. My budgie was average sized and we gave him about 2 teaspoons of budgie feed a day. Throw out the old shells from the seeds of the feed and put in new ones, don;t just add more and more. Besides normal budgie feed, get some cucumber or apple and poke it through a wire in the cage. Budgies love fruit and veg. There's also a stick with bird feed and honey or something on it, the budgie will have to really peck it and this will develop his beak.





TOYS


Put in a small soft toy which the budgie can peck and destroy. Monkeys are good, they hold on to the cage well. Also put in a ladder and swing, they are great. Don't forget some bars for the budgie to just sit on and sleep. Try the mirror idea, but if the budgie becomes agressive, remove it.





ALSO IMPORTANT


Clean out his cage every day, or every other day AT THE MOST. It is so important to maintain hygiene with a budgie. You dont want him walking in his excretement. line the bottom of the cage with newspaper (place it so ALL excretement and waste goes on the newspaper, not on bars in the cage or whatever) and put in a clean one preferably every day.


If anything looks dirty or too old replace it or clean it.

dont put a mirror in the cage if you want it to bond with you , otherwise its okay
cover the cage at night.


put a miror in the cage it makes them feel good.


talk to it alot.


and let it out and about in the house so it would feel as its not trapped and try to touch it every now and again just pet it u know.


and feed it ;)
mirra, my budgie, like its cage alot! budgies are mostly hardy little birds. let it sit on your shoulder wherever u go but beware of poop. the need vegie and seeds. water too. u should talk to it and play with it. one day it might even follow u! give some grit for it to eat as well. little only. they need it to digest food.
