First time puppy owner, any tips or advice?

Yesterday, my husband surprised me with an early christmas present...he got me an english bulldog puppy! She is 10 weeks old and so adorable and playful. I just wanted to know if anyone has any first time puppy owner tips or advice on housebreaking, crate training, feeding, biting and so on!First time puppy owner, any tips or advice?
well take it to doggy school...First time puppy owner, any tips or advice?
HOUSEBREAKING IS THE MOST IMPORTANT THING IN THE WORLD. It is SOOO MUCH WORK and is EXTREMELY difficult and time consuming but trust me, STICK WITH IT until your little puppy fully understands it is NOT ok to go potty inside! I have a chihuahua that I did not stick with the potty training 100% and I'm STILL having problems with her, and with my first chihuahua I never backed down with the training and she will hold it for 9 hours if she has to! You'll regret it so much later if oyu don't get your little one trained ASAP!
Alot of sites on internet that can help u Google it. That little puppy will become your best friend. Be patient she is just a baby. It takes time to train them, about a year for potty training( she will have accidents and after awhile she will know she did wrong. It takes quite a while for their bladder to develop so they can ';hold it'; for longer periods of time) Train her to go outside do not use puppy pads. She will think the whole house is her puppy pad. Take her outside every 30-40 minutes to the same spot each time Tell her to potty. That will be her spot, not your house.
As far as house training. Get some puppy pads. They are great, it's just a little disposable mat that you lay on the floor. What I did with our puppy is after she had an accident I would clean it and put the puppy pad in the same spot. She started geting used to the idea of going to the bathroom on the pad if she was not outside, then I would simply keep moving the pad a little at a time closer to the door. When we reached the door (about 3 days) I put the puppy pad outside. When she couldn't find the pad she started whinning letting me know she had to go to the bathroom. Within 2 weeks of bringing her home she was completly house broken.

Feeding, I am a big fan of Puppy chow and then Dog chow when she is older. It says right on the bag how much and how often to feed. Biting-get her chew toys. Something that doesn't look like a shoe or anything else in your house you don't want her to chew. If you find she chews the furniture, steps ect. they make this stuff called no chew spray, spray it on whatever she is chewing on that you don't want her to and she will stop-it tastes awful (don't ask how I know!!). Biting...it may sound harsh, but when my puppy went through the biting stage I would take my index finger and bop her snout and say no. It didn't hurt her, but she understood that it was no acceptable.

If you are crate training and she won't sleep at night, put a small clock up against her cage so she can hear it ticking..it will comfort her reminding her of her mothers heart beat.

Hope this helps...Good luck!!!
hey...congratulations..you got a puppy =)

Things you have to remember is that dogs at this age love and have to chew. If you dont want them chewing on your pillows or carpets, then get him a chew toy. For eating, regular dog food from the pet store would do. Sausages and rice would be fine too for your bulldog.

Dont feed dogs chocolate. Chocolate is poison to them so just make sure you dont drop around chocolate in the house.

For sleeping, any dog would do fine by sleeping on the carpet, but if you want, you can buy him a small doggy mat if you live in an apartment or a dog house if you live in a villa with a garden.

You would need a leash too to take him for a walk....you should take him in the morning 8 am, then again at 11am or 12pm and then at 3pm, then at 6pm and you can end the day with the last walk at 9pm or 10 pm. The reason you have to take a dog for so many walks is because your dog is young, he will be needing to use the toilet a lot

Thats basically all. Enjoy your new dog

Good luck =)
Buy those little puppy pads that are scented for them to pee on. As she uses them move them closer and closer to the back door or the door you would want her to go outside from. Still take her outside and when she uses the bathroom give her a treat. When the pad is directly by the door move it outside. She will cry to go out to her pad. Once it has been outside for a while get rid of it all together and by then she should have the idea that she needs to go otuside to use the bathroom. make her cage comfy with blankets or pillows so she wants to go in there (my dog just runs in there and loves her cage!) put her somewhere else when she is in trouble or else she will never want to go in there and will cry when she is in there. Buy lots of bones and chew toys cause if she has plenty of those she wont chew on your stuff when she starts teething....You have to smack her little nose if she does something bad as much as you dont want too. Telling her No will not do any good untill she can associate ';No'; to a smack or being in trouble. Then you wont have to smack her you can just say No and she will understand if she doesnt stop she will be smacked or put in the bathroom or jsut get into trouble! Good luck they are a handful but worth it!!!
Keep her in an enclosed area so she can't get hurt or something. Keep her on a good diet so keep human food out of reach. Take her outside every once and awhile to get her use to the place. Watch TV with her. Buy a kenel so maybe when she acts up, you can put her in there for a short amount of time. Kinda scould her when you do. Train her to sit and roll and all that. Teach her to handshake for kicks

Remember to have fun with your puppy. She will have lots of energy and will need your help in burning it off. I have found Latex toys to be the best... dogs can't seem to tear them apart (and there is no such things as too many toys...helps keep them from chewing on your things). Also remember to take away any toys that are breaking apart or have holes in them... you don't want your little one eating pieces of her toys. It would be a good idea to see if you can find any doggie play dates in your area. The sooner you get her used to other dogs the better (and it helps burn off energy too). Don't be afraid to be a concerned ';parent';. If there is something going on with your pup that you are unsure of, don't be afraid to call the vet or go see them. It is better to catch something right away then let it get worse... that is what vets are for. You can also look things up at www.webvet.com... this is a great source for all kinds of health questions you may have. You may also want to do some research on her breed to see what kind of health problems the breed might have. Have fun with your little one and always remember to give her a pat on the head and a scratch behind the ears when you are leaving her alone at home.
Just lay one bit of newspaper where she sleeps don't surround it in newspaper. Teach her to go there. You're going to have accidents but that's how she'll learn. As for biting if you treat her nice and good and care for her well she won't be too bad. They all bite a little but teach them that it's wrong and it'll be great. Enjoy your new puppy x
just give it comfort train it feed it 2 bowls a day of food never lock them in a room or bathroom and most important

NEVER i say NEVER just give them a treat that have to earn it try something simple when training like sit or stay and when there old enogh get a shock collar to train them in how far they can go out side from the house
make sure that when he bites you at this age tell him to stop no so that way when he gets older he will know that its bad to bite and get her some pee pads and sit them in the very back of the crate and whenever you leave leave her in there so she will learn were her pot is and the more she eats the more she pees and poop so feed her about every 3 hours so that way she want go to the everywhere

The above are all free E-books that you can download.

your dog will urinate in the house very often, but as it gets older it will stop but if you see your dog urinating pick the dog up and take it outside till the dog get use to going out side
make sure plenty of power cords are laying out. and
keep her outside until she can control herself then tech her all the tricks that u want her to learn quick
if u crate train the sooner the better, puppy may whine cause it is missing the mom's interaction and its siblings heat. u could try and give it a old tshirt or shoe , one to smell and have the comfort and second shoe to naw at . but have to remember when she comes out of crate u have to let her know NO. first mistake is thinking something is cute she does then next thing ur running after her saying no. . House breaking , depends if u live where u have a yard or in an apt . pick a corner close to her bed but not too close , like crate in one corner and paper in another corner in a straight line. put a garbage bag down on floor and tape it and then lay newspaper ontop , that way is saves ur carpet or floors . take her to the paper after she eats or drinks and when she goes praise her bigtime and let her no its good. if u see her pee on the floor grab her right away and take her to paper and then praise her , don't get mad at her while u taking her to paper cause she might associate paper as being bad.

If by some chance u walk and see she has made a mess ,grab her and show her it and say no bad ,and then take her to paper and say this is where u go pp and praise her. usually within 20mins of eating or drinking dogs will go to the washroom, feed puppy about 1/2 cup puppy food or read the directions as foods can vary. i like pedigree but u may not,

once she is paper trained and she gets older move paper closer to the door so she starts associating paper to outside, cause once u see her going to the paper u can run and open door and take her out and amke sure lots of praise when she does good , other thing u can do is take a couple of pennies and put in jar and when she is going to do wrong u give it a shake and scares her , this way u not hitting her , making her shy of u . GL hope this helps ,,have had many dogs in my time but everyone has different ways of training .
