I posted this in a similar thread a week or so ago:

If you are going to physically prepare yourself make sure you educate yourself - don't just throw yourself into weights everyday or running everyday - neither are effective methods of improving your strength and fitness and will likely make you more susceptible to injury at worst.

Some good starting points for educating yourself about physical preparation:

Strength Training - Starting Strength by Mark Rippetoe (search the book at http://www.amazon.com) - wiki page here: http://startingstrength.wikia.com/

Speed/General Fitness - GPP Essentials DVD by Charlie Francis - charliefrancis.com (sign up and ask questions on the forum for advice too)

An alternative (easier option) is to find a quality physical preparation coach that will do the job for you (all you have to do is rock up and listen to what he says). I've heard good things about Melbourne Athlete Development - http://melbourneathletedevelopment.com - and would advise you to contact them if you're interested in their services.

To add further to that, you played you mentioned you played your first game in a year, so don't expect to improve overnight, it will take time to regain touch, timing, skills and other attributes. The more game time you get under your belt the better you will get, as long as you have the right attitude and application. Good luck and enjoy your footy!Foootball(afl)training tips/advice?
well if you actually attend footy training, they'll show you.
